Dilly Dip - also known as "weird stuff"

My kids cannot get enough of this. They love to dip carrots and celery in it and are always requesting it.

1/2 cup low fat or non fat mayonnaise
1/2 cup nonfat sour cream
1 tablespoon dill weed
1/2 teaspoon Bon Appetit*

  1. Place all ingredients in a small bowl and mix well.
  2. Serve with your favorite vegetables.

Yield: 1 cup of dip

tot tip: Put a spoonful of mayonnaise and sour cream on the child's plate. Sprinkle dill weed and Bon Appetit on top and let them mix it themselves with a carrot or celery stick. For children under three who may choke on raw vegetables, steam the vegetables lightly before serving.

* Bon Appetit can be found in the spice section at the grocery. Instead of Bon Appetit, you could use 1/4 teaspoon minced onion, 1/4 teaspoon parsley flakes, and 1/8 teaspoon salt.

Applesauce Gel Squares

You'll love this healthy sugar free finger gelatin. This is a good transitional food for older babies who are venturing from baby food, but haven't mastered the use of spoons.

1/8 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
1 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 cups apple juice
3 small packages unflavored gelatin*

  1. In a small bowl, mix cinnamon into applesauce and set aside.
  2. Pour 1 cup cold apple juice in 8x8 pan and sprinkle gelatin on top.
  3. Heat remaining 1 cup of apple juice in the microwave for 3 minutes or until boiling.
  4. Stir boiling juice into the gelatin and cold apple juice.
  5. Stir in applesauce.
  6. Refrigerate for 1/2 hour and then stir to keep applesauce evenly distributed. If you omit this step the applesauce settles to the bottom, but it still tastes great!
  7. Refrigerate for an additional 2 1/2 hours or until firm.
  8. Cut into squares with a knife, or use cookie cutters to cut into shapes, and serve.

* Unflavored gelatin can be found near the jello at a grocery store. It is great to have on hand for making finger jello from juice. One envelope (7 grams) gels one cup of liquid.
